What to Know Before Remodeling Your Master Bedroom

When you’re preparing to remodel the master bedroom, you probably have a bunch of great ideas floating around your head. If you’re like most of us, you’ve been daydreaming about this moment for quite a while now.

But that doesn’t mean you should jump straight in and start remodeling as soon as you have the budget. On the contrary, anyone who has been through this before would advise you to take some time and think things through. Why? Well, there are a few things you should know before remodeling your master bedroom.

Lucky for you, we’re going to cover them all in this post.

Dedicate a Week to Planning

If you’re handling the remodel yourself, you may even need more than a week of planning. But you really want to be sure of the design you’re after before anyone picks up a hammer.

You know that old adage: measure twice and cut once? The same logic applies to remodeling your master bedroom. This is something you’re likely to do once during your homeownership, so you’re going to want to get it right.

Pull together the looks you want with Pinterest boards and do your best to visualize how everything will look in your space. If you’re working with a contractor, he will probably be able to provide you with a CAD drawing of your new space. And if you’re DIY’ing this project, you can use software to do the same on your own. It’ll take more time, but it’s best to get a feel for your space before it’s too late.

Keep an Eye on Your Budget

It’s easy to get carried away when you’re planning your new master bedroom. After all, this is meant to be your safe haven and romantic getaway. You want it to have exactly the right look and feel.

But when designing any room, we must keep budget in mind because these projects have a way of taking on a life of their own. Construction projects, even renovations, seldom go under budget. Instead, people usually end up exceeding their initial budget, if only by a little.

So make sure you start with a number you’re extremely comfortable with. This way, if you inadvertently go over, it’s not devastating.

Décor is Important

Most of your remodel could be considered a construction project. Your budget will largely go to contractors, but design is an important element to the overall appeal of the room.

Actually, if you focus on the design in the initial stages, you may find that you can spend less on construction (and overall) to accomplish the look you’re after.

As part of the process, you’ll have to balance the décor and the space you have. If you’re deciding between a king and queen bed, consider the overall space you’ll have after the remodel. Also, consider the other furniture that’ll be in the room.

For a king-sized bed, you’ll want your room to be about 14’ x 19’ feet at a minimum. This is a room that could comfortably fit that size bed. If your master bedroom will be smaller in either length or width upon completion, you may want to consider a queen-sized bed.

You’re probably going to want the new bedroom to feel open and airy, and that won’t be possible if it’s cluttered with furniture.

Remodeling your master bedroom can be a fun process, but it can also be a major headache if you don’t consider all factors. Things like budgeting, wall placement, and design are extremely important, and you don’t want to find out you’ve made a big mistake during the remodel. Changes can be very costly after you start remodeling your master bedroom.
