Paper books bring the charm of intelligence to any interior. A small library is not only compact storage for books but also a great opportunity to show your decorating talents. Take advantage of the below smart and inspiring home library solutions virtually anywhere in your home. Use paper books to excellently decorate your apartment and show the interior from the best side.

Stunning Home Library Design Ideas

Expert tips will help you arrange your library so that your favorite books are always at hand and make the interior look really impressive.

  1. Before designing a library, measure the existing shelves with a tape measure. Thus, it is easier to calculate the number of books that you can put in there. When you understand how many meters you have for the library, it will be easier for you to choose a proper storage system;
  2. When choosing a storage system, consider the weight of the books. A common and very dangerous mistake is to put a sofa against the wall, and hang a two-meter bookshelf above it without additional supports. Such a design solution is quite risky and impracticable;
  3. Choose between glazed and open shelves. Of course, it is a matter of taste. Although books gather less dust behind the glass, they are visually less accessible. If your choice is glazed storage systems, keep in mind that the most convenient door designs are slide doors that retract into horizontal grooves in the shelves;
  4. Consider installing readjustable shelves that can be rearranged by changing their height. For a growing library, this is by far the best option;
  5. To store books, you can use unusual places; for example, you can store books under console tables or under window sills. Think outside the box, and you will find a good solution!
  6. It is better to give preference to artificial lighting. Ultraviolet light and bright light, in general, have a detrimental effect on paper. At the same time, in order not to spoil your eyesight, it is important to provide well-thought-out general and local lighting from several sources;
  7. Convenient ladders are a necessary part of the library interior. Indeed, it is just perfect when cabinets reach up to the ceiling. In this case, they are roomy and look beautiful. This is where transforming ladders will come in handy;
  8. Arranging a library in the bedroom or nursery is a big mistake. Book dust is a very strong allergen. If there is nowhere else to place books, then the shelves must be glazed. However, glazing is not 100% dustproof;
  9. The optimal shelf depth is no more than 16 to 20 inches. Otherwise, there is a temptation to put books in two rows, which is rather impractical. In professional storage systems, the lower shelves are made deeper. They can host large-format albums, while narrow shelves are used for smaller books and journals;
  10. In a minimalistic room, multi-colored books often add unwanted variegation to the interior. Designers from spotless agency recommend coping with this problem by placing shelves at some distance from the wall and brightly highlighting the wall itself. Against its background, all the books will look equally dark from a distance;
  11. DVDs and CDs should not be stored on open shelves of a bookcase as they do not go well with books visually. It is better to put them in drawers. This way, you can save space significantly;
  12. In small apartments and houses, it is convenient to place libraries under the stairs. As a rule, this area remains unused. The space above the interior door can also be used for this purpose;
  13. If the house has a high two-story room, you can use its upper part to store books by building a bypass gallery for easy access to the library. This solution is often used when decorating loft apartments and premises;
  14. Scattered book spines are not particularly decorative. However, the wallpaper with their image can decorate the interior. Such solutions are suitable for offices and libraries, especially if you prefer to store books in cabinets with glass or blank doors;
  15. Libraries with shelves running not horizontally but diagonally look really spectacular. They form a pattern that resembles a honeycomb. However, such storage systems are not very roomy, so they will fit for a small collection of books only.

To organize your home library in the best way, you need to consider a lot of things – from the storage system placement and its size to the number of books you are going to store there. Not to create a lot of household clutter, have a smart system for sorting your collection of literature.
