6 Places That Dust May Be Lurking in Your Home

As homeowners know, there’s no escaping dust. It’s a daily battle, and unfortunately, it can lead to various health concerns if you let it get out of hand. Accumulation of dust in your home can aggravate asthma and allergy problems and cause other respiratory illnesses. For this reason, it’s crucial to get rid of dust, wherever it may be lurking in your home.

Homeowners often overlook some less obvious places where dust can collect. If you miss these hiding places, dust will just keep accumulating and circulating in your air, and your house will never really be clean. So here are six places in your home that you shouldn’t neglect to dust.

Air Ducts and Vents

Over time, dust, dirt, pet hair, pet dander, pollen, and other contaminants can settle inside your air ducts, block them, and reduce your energy efficiency. In order to maximize the effectiveness of your HVAC equipment, keep it in good repair, make sure you have high-quality ducts, and schedule a regular duct cleaning with Thermacon Service Company, Inc.

Interior Walls

It might surprise you that dust settles on vertical surfaces as well. You will find that there’s a fine layer on the walls of your home. They may even get furry with pet hair. To clean them, use a dust mop and do a top-to-bottom cleaning.

Ceiling Fans

Dust is attracted to ceiling fan blades. If you have pets, you’ll probably also find their hair clinging to the edges of the blades. Wipe the blades and the center of the fan at least once a week with a damp cloth. If the fan is making too much noise, ask your HVAC technician to take a look at it. There may be dust inside the unit as well.

Curtains

Curtains are another favorite hiding place for dust. Dust enters your home through your windows, and much of it settles in the folds of your curtains. It’s a good idea to dust your curtains daily. You should also wash them in hot water every so often to get rid of dust mites.

Bedding

If you’re not careful, your bedding can become a haven for dust, sweat, dead skin cells, dirt, and bacteria. It is not enough to dust and shake out the sheets, bed covers, blankets, and pillows daily. To keep everything clean and fresh, change and launder your bedding as often as possible. It’s also smart to air out your bedding in the sunlight.

Furniture

Everyone knows that dust settles on the hard surfaces of wooden and metal furniture, but you will also find it on soft, upholstered surfaces. Therefore, when you dust your furniture, you need to clean all parts of it, including underneath. Dust and pet hair often collect under furniture, and you may even encounter spider webs and house lizard eggs. A handheld vacuum is perfect for cleaning out such spaces.

It’s not possible to live in an entirely dust-free environment. Dust is everywhere, and it’s a constant battle. But when you clean your house, don’t forget about these less obvious hiding places for dust. A large amount of dust can cause respiratory symptoms and affect the health of your family. So stock up on microfiber cloths, use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter, and start dusting!
