5 Essential Features of a Home Office

A few years ago, most of us would have considered a home office a big luxury. They were for people that worked from home full time or ran a home business, and those with more than one spare room that could easily make space for an office in their homes without having to give up other rooms or areas. Then the pandemic hit, and most people were forced into working from home, at least some of the time. Suddenly we found ourselves converting guest bedrooms or spare rooms that were used for storage, or even adding office spaces to unused corners of other rooms so that we had somewhere that we could work.

Now the pandemic has moved into another phase, and most people have returned to something close to pre-pandemic normal. Many of us are still working from home, or otherwise enjoying that we have an office space to practice hobbies, catch up on work, or work flexibly as much as we can.

But because so many of our home offices were put together in a hurry to meet the changing needs of our work, they aren’t exactly the best when it comes to design, productivity, comfort, and functionality. If you are thinking about a more permanent office at home, here are five essential features that you need to include.

A Desk and Chair

If you are still working on a dining table or perched on the sofa, it’s time to make a change. A supportive chair and a desk with plenty of space for you to work are the most essential elements of any home office. They’ll help you to work productively but also care for your back, neck, and wrists.

A Desktop Computer

Laptops are fantastic. They give us flexibility and are great for working on the move. But if you want to work from home more, you need to invest in a good desktop computer. Make sure the computer that you choose meets your specific needs. For example, you might want to look at Animation Desktop Computers or the best computers for graphic design.

Good Lighting

Good lighting and, if possible, plenty of natural light, will help you to work productively and boost your mood and your energy levels. Make sure you’ve got a bright overhead light but also a desk lamp for a softer option.

Handy Storage

Handy storage such as desk drawers, wall-mounted shelves, and well-organized filing cabinets are essential if your work means that you have lots of supplies or files that you need to keep safe. Storage means that you can avoid clutter, which will boost productivity and make your life easier.

A Meeting Space

A comfortable meeting space, like a sofa and table, means that you don’t have to meet clients in other areas of your house. Even if you don’t meet with clients, a comfortable seating area can be ideal if you spend a lot of time working or doing something creative.

Your home office gives you a place to work remotely, and comfortably. It’s worth taking the time to consider the elements that you need. You might want to create a floor plan to help you to work things out before buying any furniture or investing in equipment.
